The passenger planes of the late 1920s and early 1930s, bounced around in the air a lot, causing air sickness in many passengers. To reassure people, Western air Express and Boeing Air Transport (later United) began hiring registered nurses as flight attendants in the 1930s. As technological change led to a smoother ride, the duties of the flight attendants turned to offering amenities, such as those listed on this flyer, to make the flight more enjoyable.
